Well, here we are, just over a year after leaving work to hike the PCT, and we're leaving for another long term hike before going back to work. I must be a glutton for punishment.
This was the day we were slated to start the Colorado Trail (~500 miles, from South Denver to Durango). Nathan and Janelle are hiking the first few sections with us, but afternoon departure from Fort Collins means that we don't actually get to start hiking until tomorrow. This evening we stayed in a developed campground in south Denver (Chatfield Reservoir State Park). We'd bought some hot dogs and veggies to try (sort of unsuccessfully) to grill over our campfire, but did find that our aluminum tent stakes make pretty good marshmallow roasters!
We spent most of the afternoon setting up our car shuttle so that Nathan can get back to Albuquerque in time for work on Monday. At the trail head in Bailey, we met a lost dog. She was a real sweetie, her tags said her name was Cinder. She was all alone at the trail head, and all wet, so we were a little concerned that something had happened to her owners or she was really lost. We ended up trying to call her owners on Brent's sat-phone, getting her some water, and feeding her 2 hot dogs (with buns) and 6 marshmallows. Who knew dogs like marshmallows? We left her there knowing that we'd be back in 3 days, and if she was still there, we'd take her to a shelter or something.
Tomorrow, the hiking begins!
